Fix Xbox One Controller on Windows 10 Anniversary. After the Windows 10 Anniversary update Xbox One Controllers may start showing up as two XInput devices in Steam, and button presses occur twice. To fix this you need to patch in the xinputhid.sys file from an earlier Windows 7 driver.
Microsoft is rolling out another Xbox One update but this one is aimed at the console's controller.
In a blog post late Monday, Xbox Live chief Larry Hryb, aka Major Nelson, described one specific fix packed into the new firmware update -- faster connect time.
Dubbing the improvement 'Quick Connect,' Hryb said that in the past the controller took around four to five seconds to connect to the Xbox One console when someone turned it on. Now the controller should connect in under two seconds. The new update also offers a number of unspecified 'stability improvements' to resolve issues sent to Microsoft by Xbox One customers and members of the Xbox Preview Program.
Microsoft has been diligent about fixing and enhancing the Xbox One since the console debuted in November 2013. The company rolls out a number of new features and improvements on a monthly basis. That's important to keep existing users happy but also to draw in potential new customers.
Xbox One sales have generally lagged behind those of the console's chief rival, Sony's PlayStation 4. Beyond offering free bundled games, price discounts and other promotions, Microsoft needs to keeps its console up-to-date and appealing with fresh new features if it expects to draw in new users.
There is one catch to the latest update. For now, it's available only to participants of the Xbox One Preview Program. This program gives Xbox One owners an early shot at trying out new features before they roll out to all console users. Those in the Xbox Preview Program are encouraged to provide feedback and suggestions to Microsoft based on new features to help the company determine whether those features are fit and ready for all Xbox One users.
Hryb provided the following steps on how Xbox One Preview Program members can update their controller with the new firmware update:
- Connect a controller to your Xbox One with a USB cable. Keep any headsets connected to the controller.
- Connect to Xbox Live.
- Press the Menu
- Go to Settings > Devices & accessories. Select the controller.
- If you have multiple controllers attached, you can select Buzz - which will cause the selected controller to vibrate.
- Then select Update to download the new firmware to the controller attached via the USB cable, and the screen will show the Updating controller ... progress screen
- When you see the Controller updated screen, press 'B' to go back to the Devices & accessories main page
- Reselect the controller, the Firmware version, should now be: 1.2.2236.0
Microsoft did not immediately respond to CNET's request for comment.

My issue was that when I was plugging in my XBox One controller in my Windows 7 PC, the error was popping up that the 'USB Device could not be identified.' Good job Microsoft.
The sad thing about this is that on Windows 7, the drivers for the Xbox One Controllers specifically are supposed to download automatically when the device is plugged in. Obviously, since the Device Manager cannot identify the device in the first place, it doesn't know what drivers it needs to automatically download.
Unfortunately for all of us, the solution to manually download the drivers on the support website (http://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-on-windows/accessories/connect-xbox-one-controller-to-pc) is, at the time of writing, obsolete.
The webpage instructs you to follow these instructions:

- Navigate to the Xbox One Controller results page on the MicrosoftUpdate Catalog
- Download the correct version of the driver for your operating system(64bit vs 32bit)
- Extract the contents of the .cab into a file directory.
- Right click on the xb1usb.inf file, click install, and click yes.
However, users will find that when doing 'Right Click/Install' on the 64bit version of the drivers that the method of installation is no longer supported in the file. It throws the following error:
The INF file you selected does not support this method of installation

Instantly I wanted to do some dirty edits to the file to add the flags and lines required for it to be supported, however before I did something so absolutely and utterly stupid as to make manual edits to driver software without any knowledge whatsoever on the subject, I decided to take the device manager for a test run.
Here's what I did:
- Load up Device Manager
- Find the unidentified device on the list (will have a yellow errortriangle)
- Click, 'update driver'
- Click, 'browse my computer for driver software'
- Click, 'let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer'
- Then Click, 'Have Disk', and instead of selecting a disk drive, click browse
- Find the IMF file that you downloaded from the Update Catalog, select it, and click Open.
The device drivers should install correctly now, and you'll be able to play your nerdy games with no dirty edits to the file.

On my Windows 7, my Xbox One controller works both, via USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports, however, the controller's icon will show up in the Devices and printers menu only when I connect it via the USB 3.0 port! Hopefully this will also work on your PC.

I know this question is almost a year old, but there is an easier way to get the drivers. Although Microsoft removed the standalone driver installers from their website, there are still archived versions thanks to the Wayback Machine. It's as simple as using the installer and restarting your PC.
